How many words are there in English?
Somewhere between a hundred thousand and a million, depending on who is counting and what they agree to call a word. That unsatisfying answer is the honest one — but the reasons behind it are genuinely interesting, and our own dictionary puts hard numbers on a big slice of it.
Why nobody agrees
Is RUN one word or several (the verb, the noun, the cricket score)? Are RUNS, RUNNING and RAN separate words or forms of one? Does FLU count separately from INFLUENZA? Is QWERTY a word? Every dictionary answers these questions differently, so every dictionary gets a different total. Technical vocabulary moves the goalposts further: chemistry alone can generate systematic names without limit.
What the big dictionaries say
The Oxford English Dictionary's second edition contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use, plus some 47,000 obsolete ones — figures Oxford University Press publishes itself. Merriam-Webster's unabridged dictionary runs to around 470,000 entries on its publisher's count, the gap explained almost entirely by different rules about what earns a headword. Claims that English has "a million words" circulate periodically; they rely on counting methods most lexicographers don't accept.
Our own count, exactly
This site's dictionary — built from ENABLE, a public-domain lexicon designed for word games, with offensive terms removed — contains exactly 168,401 words of 2 to 15 letters. Because it is a fixed, published list, we can say things the big dictionaries cannot:
| Length | Words |
|---|---|
| 2 letters | 96 |
| 3 letters | 967 |
| 4 letters | 3,878 |
| 5 letters | 8,610 |
| 6 letters | 15,206 |
| 7 letters | 23,085 |
| 8 letters | 28,406 |
| 9 letters | 24,864 |
| 10 letters | 20,293 |
| 11 letters | 15,496 |
| 12 letters | 11,355 |
| 13 letters | 7,826 |
| 14 letters | 5,127 |
| 15 letters | 3,192 |
The distribution surprises most people: the most common word length is 8 letters (28,406 words), and the average is 8.9. The pocket-sized words we use all day are a rounding error — just 1,063 words of two or three letters — while words of nine letters and longer make up 52% of the dictionary.
How many words does one person know?
Estimates for an adult native speaker's vocabulary mostly land in the tens of thousands of word families — a fraction of any dictionary, which is why a 168,401-word game lexicon feels bottomless in play. For everyday recognisability, our tools prefer a common-words list of 8,112 entries; the full list only comes out when you ask a tool to be exhaustive.
Explore the count yourself
Every figure above is reproducible from this site's own pages: the words-by-length hub carries the exact count for each length, every letter page states its total, and the whole list ships openly at /assets/words.txt for anyone who wants to check our arithmetic.
