How syllable counting works

This tool estimates syllables from the vowel groups in each word, with adjustments for silent endings. It is accurate for most everyday words; unusual spellings can occasionally be off by one.

Frequently asked questions

Is it always exact?
It is right for the vast majority of common words. English spelling is irregular, so rare or unusual words may be off by one syllable — chiefly words with silent vowels or unusual endings.
How does the counter work?
It counts groups of vowels in each word, then adjusts for patterns like silent final E. That vowel-group method is the standard approach for automatic syllable counting: dictionary gives 4, computer 3, strength 1.
Why do dictionaries sometimes disagree on syllables?
Pronunciation varies by region and speaker — words like 'family' and 'chocolate' are two syllables in quick speech and three when spoken carefully. Dictionaries record different conventions, so small disagreements are normal.
